Artificial Intelligence in EduBase

Information on AI-based features, how they are labeled, and their limitations

Certain features of EduBase use systems based on Artificial Intelligence (AI). In accordance with the transparency requirements of the European Union’s Regulation on Artificial Intelligence (AI Regulation, (EU) 2024/1689), this page explains which features use AI, for what purposes, who encounters them, and how we label content generated by AI.

EduBase is the provider of these AI systems. The systems are based on general-purpose AI models developed by third-party providers.

AI features and their purposes
  • Question generator: it suggests questions to educators based on a given text, document, or image. The educator reviews and edits the suggestions and decides whether to use them. Who will encounter it: educators; students who fill out worksheets and exams using the prepared questions.
  • Question translator: it generates translations of existing questions into other languages, which the educators can review and edit. Who sees it: educators; respondents, through the translated questions.
  • Translation of text fields: while editing, it suggests translations for individual text fields (such as a description). The editor reviews the suggestion, corrects it, and saves it. Who comes into contact with it: educators and editors.
  • AI chat: an AI assistant set up by the educators for classes, worksheets, or exams that answers questions and provides explanations. Within a worksheet, it provides assistance with a specific question without immediately providing the solution. Who has access to it: students and respondents (including minors); educators set it up and can also view the conversations.
  • AI summary of exams: it generates a written summary of an exam's results based solely on anonymous, group-level statistics, provided that at least 10 responses have been submitted. It does not include names, individual results, or individual evaluations. Who meets with him: only the educators.
  • EduBase Assistant demo: it generates a demonstration assignment (questions and title) from a specified set of content for those interested. The AI also creates the cover image for some of these sets. Who will meet with them: interested parties and EduBase staff members.
  • Messenger Chatbot: it uses AI to recognize the language of messages so it can respond in the appropriate language. Who will encounter it: Messenger Chatbot users.
AI models and providers

The AI features are based on models from the following providers. The choice of which model a feature uses is made by EduBase, and in some cases, by the instructor.

  • OpenAI: GPT language models, image generation, and moderation of content uploaded to the question generator
  • Anthropic: Claude language models
  • Google: Gemini language and image generation models via the Google Cloud Vertex AI service, hosted in a European data center
  • Amazon Web Services: language models available on the Amazon Bedrock service in the European region

The Privacy Policy provides detailed information about the data transferred to service providers and how it is handled.

How do we label content created by AI?
  • AI chat: the chat window always indicates that you are chatting with an AI assistant, and every AI response is labeled “AI,” even if the educator has given the assistant a unique name. If an educator joins the conversation, their messages are labeled “Supervisor.”
  • Questions: questions generated using AI are accompanied by machine-readable markup on the educator dashboard, in the API, and in exports. Educators can also indicate that they have reviewed the question.
  • Worksheets and exams: if a worksheet or an exam contains questions generated with the help of AI, we will provide this information on the start page. We do not specify exactly which of these questions were generated with the help of AI.
  • AI summary of exams: the summary is always displayed as an AI-based summary, and it is assigned a machine-readable label in the API.
  • Images: we add machine-readable metadata (IPTC DigitalSourceType: trainedAlgorithmicMedia) to the file containing the AI-generated cover images, and a caption below the large-format images indicates that the image was created by AI.
  • Free text answers: it is not possible to include metadata in AI chat responses; therefore, in addition to the visible markings, we rely on the model providers’ own, invisible text watermarks, where the provider provides them.
  • Translation of text fields: these translations are only suggestions that have been reviewed and approved by the editor; therefore, they are not marked as AI-generated.
The limitations of AI
  • Content generated by AI may be incorrect, incomplete, or outdated, and it may provide answers that sound confident but are actually wrong. Always verify important information, and if in doubt, ask your educator.
  • AI chat does not replace the educator. The instructions provided by educators shape its behavior, but do not guarantee the accuracy of its responses.
  • Your messages sent in the AI chat can be viewed by your educators, and the messages are forwarded to the selected AI service provider for processing. To personalize the responses, your first name, as well as your age and gender, if you’ve provided them, will be shared. Do not share sensitive personal information in the chat.
  • The AI chatbot within the test receives the text of the question and the possible answers, but not the correct answer, so it cannot guarantee that its response is correct.
  • During an exam, the educator can configure it so that using the AI chat results in a predetermined point deduction for that specific question. This is indicated in the chat window. The AI does not decide on the point deduction.
AI does not evaluate
  • In EduBase, no AI evaluates, scores, or grades students, test-takers, or employees. Answers are evaluated based on the correct answers, scoring, and grading settings specified by the instructor, according to predefined rules.
  • Learning paths guide users according to rules specified by the instructor; AI does not play a role in them.
  • The indicator that flags suspicious responses is based on fixed, manually weighted rules; it is not an AI system. It is intended solely as a guide for the educator; it is not evidence in and of itself and does not result in any automatic consequences. Test-takers are informed of this before the test begins.
  • We do not use emotion recognition, attention tracking, or webcam analysis.
Restrictions on use

The features of EduBase AI may not be used for the purposes listed in points 3 (education and vocational training) and 4 (employment, workforce management) of Annex III to the AI Regulation, in particular:

  • a decision regarding admission to or access to an educational institution or training program;
  • to assess learning outcomes, to guide the learning process based on these outcomes, or to determine the appropriate level of training;
  • to monitor and detect prohibited conduct during exams;
  • decisions regarding hiring and selection, promotions, or termination of employment; the assignment of tasks; and the monitoring and evaluation of employees’ performance or conduct.

The detailed terms and conditions of use are set forth in the General Terms and Conditions.
